Meet HubSpot’s Chief of Staff Alison Elworthy, Former Company Intern

As the VP of Operations and Chief of Staff at inbound marketing and sales software giant HubSpot, Alison is responsible for the company’s operating system, pricing and packaging and strategic planning.

Throughout her seven-plus-year tenure at the Cambridge, Mass. tech company, she has worked her way up the ranks with titles including Marketing Operations Manager, Sales Operations Senior Manager and Director of Operations. Unsure what to do after business school and “unsure what a career could look like for women in tech”, Elworthy began her journey at HubSpot as an intern. The tech executive says she could have never imagined that when HubSpot hit the public markets in 2014, Alison, then-six-months pregnant with her second child, would be there ringing the bell.

Elworthy is an advocate of “building an operating system for work/life balance,” arguing that it is possible, even for women, to have successful careers alongside families, personal passions and side hustles. “There are a million moving pieces to any project, at any given time – being able to strategically juggle, plan, communicate and react is critical,” says the global operations leader, who recommends raising a hand for “the project nobody wants,” “planning for no plan,” finding a unique leadership style and creating patterns, especially within work schedules.

Before joining HubSpot, Alison was a User Experience Specialist at Fidelity Investments, where she focused on the customer experience of their business and customer facing products and websites.

Alison is a board member at Women in the Enterprise of Science and Technology (WEST), a learning community that provides women in the enterprise of science and technology with inspiration, knowledge and connections so to help them reach their full potential. Elworthy received a BS in Human Factors Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
